Since 2017, the Momenta Quartet has been honored to participate in Music from Japan’s annual festival. We have performed for this festival every year except in 2021 (due to COVID), and have had the opportunity to premiere over 10 new commissioned works and get to know the music of leading Japanese composers, well-known in their own country, but underrepresented in the United States. This season Momenta will perform two works by historic 20th century composers – a 1913 piano quintet Hochzeitsklänge (“Wedding Music”) by Kosaku Yamada (1886 – 1965) with pianist Taka Kigawa, and a late work by Ikuma Dan (1924 – 2001), Two Fragments in Black and Yellow (2001) with violinist Miho Saegusa.I will help bring the program to a raucous conclusion with the world premiere of Shion Sahara’s Great Pacific Garbage Pile for trombone and viola with Jen Baker on trombone.
